My Month In Uganda, Rachel’s story
A Month in Uganda
Rachel's Story from Uganda
I was feeling excited and almost couldn’t believe it was true when I set foot on Uganda for the first time. The heat was bouncing from the tarmac as we walked the short distance to collect all our holdalls from the carousel and then we were soon face to face with the biggest smiles greeting us – Caleb, our driver and Sylivia, our coordinator. What an awesome moment!
Our luggage was all secured to the vehicle and we were soon on our way to Kampala for business and an overnight stay before heading down Uganda to Rukungiri the next day. During our very short stay in Kampala we found ourselves in The Mengo Hospital to help a Revd. from Rukungiri whose wife was seriously ill and he desperately needed funds before they would x ray her. Compared to Uganda we should really count our Blessings for our health service and wonderful Ipswich Hospital!
I couldn’t stop looking around me wow! everybody walking everywhere – so many children in school uniforms, ladies in long skirts, people carrying things on their heads and all walking, walking – weaving between the heaving traffic, selling things and pushing them in the windows as we waited in traffic, in the heat.
We found our rooms and were keen to refresh – but no water! And none in the cistern … ‘they’ brought us some water in a jerry can, which I couldn’t lift! I lay awake in the night and at one point I thought I was lying in the road as I was sure a lorry drove through the room. The traffic was so loud and Kampala didn’t stop at night – I peeped out of the window as it got light and everybody was busy and so many children walking still in their school uniforms – they must just get home in the evening in time to set out for school again!
